Candle Care

For the ultimate aroma experience, please follow these candle care and safety recommendations from August Day Candle House.

  1. For your first time lighting the candle, please allow it to burn for at least 2-3 hours or until the wax has melted across the entire surface. This will increase the life span of your candle and avoid an improper burn.

  2. When lighting your candle, use long matches or a long-reach lighter. Keep your hair and loose clothing away from the flame.

  3. Immediately extinguish your candle if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check for breezes or drafts before re-lighting.

  4. Please keep your candle away from children, pets, or anyone who could mishandle or knock over a burning candle.

  5. Allow your candle “breathing room” by placing it in a well-ventilated area but do avoid breezes from opened windows, drafts, or vents.

  6. Place your candle on a flat, sturdy, and heat-resistant surface.

  7. When choosing a space to burn your candle, be mindful to avoid areas with flammable materials in close proximity. (i.e. curtains, fabrics, papers, books, decorative items, etc.)

  8. Never leave your candle unattended - always extinguish your candle before leaving your space or before feeling drowsy/sleepy.

  9. To avoid a fire hazard, keep your candle free of wick trimmings, debris, and dust.

  10. Store your candle in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. Otherwise, you run the risk of your candle’s life span decreasing.

  11. Before touching or moving the candle, wait until the jar has cooled completely and the wax has hardened. The candle jar and wax can become extremely hot while burning.

  12. Do not burn your candle for longer than 4-hours. Extinguish the flame and allow the candle to cool for at least 1-2 hours before relighting.

  13. Please make it a habit to trim your wick a 1/4" prior to burning (our candles are pre-trimmed) or after your candle has been lit for 2 hours or more. This will help to avoid a hazardous flame length, soot build-up, and unnecessary smoke. You can purchase our Wick Trimmers here.

Wooden Wick Candles

For our Wooden Wick candles, please follow all recommendations listed above and below:

  1. To light, tilt the candle slightly and let the flame go across the length of the wick.

  2. Upon lighting the candle, you will hear a soft crackling noise. This will last the entire burn and is perfectly normal.

  3. Remove all charred (blackened) wood from previous burns. If you don’t, the wick may not stay lit long enough to fuel the flame, causing it to extinguish itself.

  4. Do not extinguish the candle with the accompanying lid. Reasons include:

    • It will damage the underside of the lid and create soot build-up inside of the jar which is a fire hazard.

    • In addition to the soot build-up inside the jar, it will also settle into the candle wax. This will alter the original color of the candle wax and cause the fragrance to smell smokey and unpleasant.
